San Jose

Auf San Jose waren wir sehr neugierig, denn nach so langer Zeit zuvor in armen Laendern wollten wir mal wieder in eine westernisierte Haupstadt und wir wurden nicht enttaeuscht. Ja, es gibt auch hier wie in allen anderen Stadten auf der Welt ihre Taschendiebe und einige male versuchte man unseren Rucksack aufzuzippen, aber es ist nichts weggekommen. Hier sitzt Marty auf dem Balkon unseres Hotels. San Jose is definitely the most pleasant of the Central America capital cities we’ve been to despite it being the only place where we’ve had people try to unzip our bags as we walk down the street. Here’s me clipping my claws on the balcony of our very cheap, windowless and otherwise rather prison-like hotel. |
Hier ist der Blick von dem selben Balkon auf die mit Strassenverkaeufern ueberfuellten Buergersteige. Dies ist ein typisches Bild fuer die Strassen in Zentral Amerika, aber die Fussgaengerzone ( ja, sowas gibt es hier!) ist ohne Autos und wirklich uebersaeht von Nobelgeschaeften und natuerlich Quicksilver shops, ganz wie bei uns zu Hause. This is the view down to the street from the same balcony. I just read in the paper today that all these streets vendors have just been given 3 months to disappear from the streets of San Jose. Street vending is illegal but the real problem is that they crowd the footpath forcing pedestrians onto the road. If you tried that in Mexico City I think you’d put about 5 million people out of work! Anyway, apparently the vendors are now taking their case the Latin American Court of Human Rights. So stay tuned... This scene is actually very typical of large Central American cities but the 7-block main shopping mall in San Jose is positively ritzy. I really felt like I could have been in Sydney. |

Was echt super war : in San Jose gab es ein Kino und wir konnten endlich " Herr der Ringe" sehen !! Da hatten wir uns schon lange drauf gefreut und die Vorstellung war sogar auf Englisch mit Spanischem Untertitel. Und da der Eintrittspreis nur 2.50 Euro gekostet hat sind wir gleich 2 mal gegangen... ;) ! Now Sonja on the balcony. |
Als wir an diesem Park vorbeikamen hat der Mann Marty zu einem Spiel Mache herausgefordert. So genau kenn ich die Regeln auch nicht, aber in der Mitte stehen auf 3 Holzkegeln jeweils 3 kleine Metallhuelsen, die es gilt mit einem Tennisball und eine Art Golfschlaeger von den Holzkegeln zu kicken ohne das die Holzkegel umfallen. Dieser suesse Opa schlug Marty ohne Schwierigkeiten. Walking through the Central Park this excitable little man insisted on teaching me to play this Costa Rican game called Mache. I can’t explain all the rules here but the aim is basically to knock off nine little metal nuts balanced on top of three wooden pins by hitting a tennis ball with a croquet mallet from the outside of a perimeter circle without knocking the pins over. This chap beat me handsomely... |

Dann spielte Marty noch eine Runde gegen einen 15 Jaehrigen und zum Glueck liess dieser Marty gewinnen... Then I played a full best-of-5 series against this guy (well, maybe he was 15) and despite my obvious home ground disadvantage managed to beat him! |

In ganz Zentral Amerika wird die Basis zu fast jedem Gericht aus Reis und Bohnen gebildet. Regional bedingt gibt es gibt immer kleine Variationen. In Costa Rica sind z.B. die Bohnen gebraten. Zum Fruehstueck werden gebraten Eier mitgeliefert und das ganze nennt sich hier dann Gallo Pinto. Zum Mittag gibt es dann antstatt der Eier wahlweise Huhn oder Schwein, in manchan Regionen auch Fisch. Und ob ihr es glaubt oder nicht, ich mag Bohnen immer noch! Ich finde das ziemlich faszinierend, das es hier sogar bei Mc Donalds ein eigenes Fruehstuecksmenu gibt...Namens McPinto ! You can’t quite read the writing on the center panel but it says McPinto™. Gallo Pinto is like the national food (at least for breakfast) in Costa Rica (and Nicaragua and maybe other places too). All it is is just rice and frijoles (red kidney beans) mixed together. It seems too healthy for McDonalds to bother making it. I’m sure they’ve found someway to make it unhealthy... |
Immer wieder bin ich fasziniert von dem was ich nur als Zimmerpflanze von zu Hause kenne und hier rankt sich diese Pflanze als riesiger Schmarotzer am Baum entlang. Sonja ;) Ah, and incidentally, San Jose is where we have taken the time to get this second installment of the website up and running. |
