El Lago de Atitan would have to come close to being the nicest place we have seen so far. It is a lake that has formed in an enormous collapsed caldera of an ancient volcano. It is surrounded on all sides by cliffs and mountains to a height of maybe 300m and the lake itself is more that another 300m deep. Besides the mountains and cliffs around the lake three more volcanoes have sprouted up on the edge of the lake. For us a single volcano would be an awe-inspiring site, so you can imagine this place just takes it to a whole new level. There are 10-15 towns scattered around the shore of the lake speaking a total of three distinct Mayan languages (with many people here not speaking Spanish at all). Nevertheless, it's one of the most popular places in Central America to learn Spanish, but I guess that has more to do with the price and the location. You can get one-on-one classes here for about €2 an hour and you can sit right on the shore to receive them.

Der Lago de Atitlan ist einer der schoensten Plaetze, an denen wir bisher waren. Ein Vulkanausbruch vor 85.000 Jahren formte einen riesigen Krater, der jetzt angefuellt ist mit kristallblauen Wasser. Der See ist an seiner tiefsten Stelle bis zu 320 m tief und umfasst ca. 125 km2, umgeben von bewachsenden Bergen und Vulkanen. Er liegt auf einer Hoehe von 1550 m ueber Meeresspiegel, daher hat die Sonne tagsueber verdammt viel Kraft, aber sobald sie untergegangen ist kuehlt es sich sofort ab und Nachts bin ich froh, meinen Schlafsack zu haben. Um den See herum gibt es 10-15 kleine Doerfchen und es ist kaum vorstellbar, das hier 3 verschiedene Mayasprachen gesprochen werden. Die Entfernung der Doerfer untereinander hat sie ueber Jahrhunderte hinweg aufrecht erhalten. Es gibt immer noch einige Alte Leute hier, die bis heute kein Spanisch sprechen. Trotzdem ist witziger weise San Pedro ueberhaeuft mit Sprachschulen, wo wir fuer fuer €2 pro Stunde Privatunterricht hatten, ein Lehrer zu einem Schueler.
